Let me know in the comments if you struggle with eating too much sugar like I do. In this series, I bring you alongside my journey to stop eating so much sugar and so many chips. As a future registered dietitian nutritionist, I don't believe in cutting out any foods from the diet. BUT I have been eating lots of ice cream, chips, and other processed snacks for months.
I have tried again and again to cut out dessert cold turkey, eat less, count calories, or portion out just a little dessert or chips, but I have not found a solution that has worked for me yet. This time, I am approaching cutting out sugar in a different way. Instead of focusing so much on reducing how much I eat, I am focusing on getting 3-4 balanced meals per day with a night snack. I never ate breakfast; in fact, I don't know the last time I consistently ate breakfast. I would also end up so hungry at night and prioritize my night snacks more than dinner. This time, I am flipping the script and eating as many whole foods as I need to feel satisfied so that I am not tempted to reach for a quart of ice cream or half of a family-sized bag of chips (literally).
Focusing on improving health and longevity and reducing the risk of chronic diseases is another change I made this time. Instead of eating as little as I can while also cutting out sugar, I can approach getting healthier with an abundance mindset rather than a reductionist mindset. This has already made all the difference.
You can do this, too. I know I am not the only one who struggles with their eating behaviors and relationship with food. It is so hard, because we have to eat every single day, multiple times a day! I hope this series will help you find the courage to just start somewhere. Changing your eating habits doesn't have to be perfect -- It starts with one choice at a time.
