Initially, the captain of the U.S.S. Stark did not know what to make of the unknown aircraft approaching his ship while on patrol in the Persian Gulf during the Iran-Iraq War. It didn’t appear to be hostile, and, although not known at the time, it was, in fact, a private business jet.
