But the sewer did not maintain itself.
Hidden below the marble temples, crowded markets, and imperial palaces was a forgotten workforce. Slaves, prisoners, and condemned laborers were sent into the dark tunnels to clear debris, repair damaged stone arches, and keep the sewer flowing.

They worked in knee-deep sewage, breathing toxic air and facing sudden floods that could rush through the tunnels without warning.
Without them, Rome itself would have struggled to survive.
