In this video I trace the history of the lion as an astrological symbol, how it was absorbed into Judeo-Christian beliefs and became a symbol of the evangelist St Mark and how the city of Venice famously made St Mark their patron saint by stealing his body. I then look at the variety of ways the lion represents Venice in art, architecture and military images, right through to the modern age. Enjoy!
