Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert survive scary car accident

The Dancing With the Stars judge and his fiancée revealed on Instagram on Friday that they were both involved in a "very scary automobile accident" while driving through the highlands on December 12. While they did not say exactly what happened, they did say it involved "a steep incline, slippery roads, a tree, and worst of all, the worry that we might go off the mountain."

"We have so much to be grateful for, given the circumstances," Erbert remarked. "First and foremost, there were no other people involved. Second, paramedics responded quickly. Finally, that we are both fine and that I only have a few bruises, a swollen face, and four stitches above my brow."

Along with the statement, Erbert shared a video of the San Bernardino County Fire Department arriving on the site, the damage to their car, and Erbert getting treated for her injuries. It also showed the two trying to cheer themselves up after the tragedy by eating pizza and snacks from the grocery store — even if Erbert found it difficult owing to her injuries.

"Now, more than ever, we recognize the fragility of life and the need of loving those around you," she said. "We wish everyone a safe, healthy, and joyous holiday season."

Hough disclosed in the comments area that the "scariest aspect" for him was Erbert's instant reaction to the accident, which he claims she can't recall now. "She was confused afterwards, cheerfully saying we should go to supper while blood flowed down her cheeks," he recalled. "That terrified me. When the firemen arrived 20 minutes later, she awoke."

Following the shocking announcement, the pair's Dancing With the Stars pals soon flooded their comments with love and support. According to Peta Murgatroyd, "Guys, I'm so glad you're both okay!!! Thank you, God!"

Cheryl Burke continued, "Omg! Thank goodness you're both fine. I wish you well and a speedy recovery. You'll be chewing candy in no time."
