Malilipot is a coastal municipality in the province of Albay.
How it got its name? There are three legends about it:
According to the first legend, the Spanish colonizers arrived at this new settlement in December. The weather was so frigid that the Spaniards exclaimed "muy frio," which the locals interpreted as "Malilipot," which means "extremely cold."
Another story is that when a Spanish ship docked at Malilipot Bay, the Spaniards asked a native fisherman for the name of the place. Due to the language barrier, the indigenous mistook him for asking about their conditions, to which they replied "nalilipot kami." The Spaniards, therefore, assume that the location was called "Malilipot."
Another legendary name for the town was "Manlipod," which means "Protector," and was credited to the mountain ranges that had sheltered the settlement from the early disastrous eruptions of Mayon Volcano. It was said that if these mountain ranges had not existed, the Poblacion would have been buried beneath the molten lava and ashes released by Mount Mayon.
