Some moments you don’t want to end—
standing across the Hudson,
Manhattan glowing like a promise,
its lights flickering into the water.
In your head an old melody on shehnai,
curling like smoke through your chest,
celebrating the union of words, which
ricochet on the waves of your mind,
and consciousness of the universe,
The stars you cannot see in world light, yet
finding the one you’ve sought forever,
savoring this as they all hold you still
as the ancient bard sings: “Linger on!”

Here is a traditional translation:

ਬਿਹਾਗੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਘਰੁ ੨
bihaagaRaa mahalaa panjavaa ghar doojaa
Bihaagraa, Fifth Mehla, Second House:
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ikOankaar sat naam gur prasaadh ||
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਵਧੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਰੈਨੜੀਏ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਲਗਾ ॥
vadh sukh rainaRe'e pria prem lagaa ||
O peaceful night, grow longer - I have come to enshrine love for my Beloved.
ਘਟੁ ਦੁਖ ਨੀਦੜੀਏ ਪਰਸਉ ਸਦਾ ਪਗਾ ॥
ghaT dhukh needhaRe'e parasau sadhaa pagaa ||
O painful sleep, grow shorter, so that I may constantly grasp His Feet.

ਪਗ ਧੂਰਿ ਬਾਂਛਉ ਸਦਾ ਜਾਚਉ ਨਾਮ ਰਸਿ ਬੈਰਾਗਨੀ ॥
pag dhoor baa(n)chhau sadhaa jaachau naam ras bairaaganee ||
I long for the dust of His Feet, and beg for His Name; for His Love, I have renounced the world.
ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਹਜ ਮਾਤੀ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗਨੀ ॥
pria ra(n)g raatee sahaj maatee mahaa dhuramat tiaaganee ||
I am imbued with the Love of my Beloved, and I am naturally intoxicated with it; I have forsaken my awful evil-mindedness.

ਗਹਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਲੀਨੑੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭੀਨੀ ਮਿਲਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਚ ਮਗਾ ॥
geh bhujaa leen(h)ee prem bheenee milan preetam sach magaa ||
He has taken me by the arm, and I am saturated with His Love; I have met my Beloved on the Path of Truth.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਧਾਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਹਉ ਚਰਣਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਗਾ ॥੧॥
binava(n)t naanak dhaar kirapaa rahau charaneh sa(n)g lagaa ||1||
Prays Nanak, please Lord, shower Your Mercy on me, that I may remain attached to Your Feet. ||1||
