Description: Elucidating the chemical composition and phase mineralogy at a fundamental scale is crucial for understanding the behavior of heterogeneous concrete ingredients ranging from aggregate to cement. Traditional investigative methods such as NMR, X-ray diffraction, and various microscopy techniques, despite their limitations, collectively provide significant insights into these complex materials. Raman imaging, a complementary high-resolution method, offers direct fingerprinting of minerals and their polymorphs. Here, a novel analytical methodology is presented for rapid and accurate mapping of static heterogeneous systems such as siliceous aggregates and a diverse range of cements (Fig. 1). Additionally, the application of this technique in dynamic phenomena, including irradiation damage in concrete aggregates and corrosion in concrete is demonstrated. These results pave the way for future application of Raman imaging in designing sustainable materials and monitoring concrete performance.
