In today's problem, we are given a square-loop pipe distribution network with one inflow and three outflows, both of which total 2500 gallons per minute. We are also given a table containing the flow, Hazen-Williams C value, diameter, and length of each pipe segment. The problem asks us to use the Hardy Cross method to find the flow correction in the pipes. This can be done in a few (large) steps.
Step 1. Realize that the Hardy Cross equation requires us to calculate two additional terms - head loss and head loss divided by flow. Create columns in your table for these values.
Step 1.5 Go to the pipe network figure, and set a convention to identify which flows are going to be considered positive, and which will be negative. We assume in this example that clockwise will be positive.
Step 2. Use the Hazen-Williams equation for head loss to find the head loss in each pipe segment. Then divide each value by the flow in the segment. Make sure to include your positive and negative signs found in step 1.5. This could be the longest step in the problem to complete.
Step 3: Sum all of the head losses and head losses divided by Q and plug into the Hardy Cross equation to find the corrected flow value for this network.
