Rep. Chip Roy Confronts SPLC Chief Over Missing Islamic Groups On Hate Map

Chip Roy (R-TX) confronted Southern Poverty Law Center Interim President Bryan Fair during a House Judiciary Committee hearing titled "The Southern Poverty Law Center: Manufacturing Hate, Part II," pressing the organization over which groups appear — and which don't — on its widely referenced hate map.

The SPLC's hate map currently lists approximately 1,263 active hate and anti-government groups, including 96 organizations classified as anti-LGBTQ — many of them Christian advocacy groups — while Rep. Roy questioned the absence of certain Islamic organizations from the list. The SPLC sits on an $800+ million endowment and has long been used as a reference by federal agencies and corporate partners.

The hearing also examined recently released information indicating the SPLC paid over $3 million to informants embedded in so-called "hate groups," leading to a federal indictment on charges including wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering. FBI Director Kash Patel has already severed all ties with the organization, calling it a "partisan smear machine."

The SPLC's hate map has faced scrutiny for years, including after a 2012 gunman targeted the Family Research Council, later telling authorities he selected FRC after finding it listed on the SPLC's hate group map.
