Kurdish official rejects self-rule option

Описание: (16 Mar 2016) A senior official from the Kurdish National Council on Wednesday rejected remarks by a Syrian Kurdish political party who claimed they were planning to declare a federal region in northern Syria.
Abdulhakim Bashar, who is a senior official of the Syrian opposition's High Committee (HNC) representing Kurds in the Geneva peace talks, said that the Democratic Union Party did not represent the majority of Kurdish people in Syria.
Bashar insisted the Kurdish cause had to be addressed "within the Syrian national consensus and within the Syrian constitution" and that any other solution would cause harm.
The declaration by the Democratic Union Party is expected to be made at the end of a Kurdish conference that is being held Wednesday in the town of Rmeilan in northern Syria.
Kurds are the largest ethnic minority in Syria, making up more than 10 percent of the prewar population of 23 million.
They control a border area stretching from the predominantly Kurdish town of al-Malikiyah in the east, near the Iraqi border, to Afrin in the west, interrupted only by a stretch of territory that the Islamic State group controls.
