Zarko Paspalj was brought over to the NBA in 1989-90 season because he caught the eye of assistant coach, Gregg Popovich. However, Zarko was never completely a rotation player in San Antonio because Spurs head coach Larry Brown hated his game, called him “zero defense, all offense” (probably shouldn’t have drafted Darko then, Joe Dumars, huh?) Zarko then went back to Europe but returned in 1996 when the Atlanta Hawks invited him to training camp. Zarko ended up returning to Europe because of a “family emergency” (he was having an affair) and ended up contemplating retirement because of his chain-smoking habit and his body was breaking down. Zarko ended up playing until 1998, only playing that year as a favor to one of his longtime friends, who was on the team he played for in Europe.
Do you think Zarko could’ve made it in today’s NBA, I think he could’ve, a 6’10 lanky lefty with ball handling and could stretch the floor? I think he would’ve been just fine in the NBA today.
