A San Francisco office networking event turned into a national conversation when one Indian automatically switched to Hindi with another Indian. He assumed they both “clearly knew it.” The other person answered in English. What followed was a tweet asking if people were ashamed of their mother tongue, and then a reply that received about 24,000 likes: “I was the other guy. I am South Indian. I do not speak Hindi. How would you have liked it if I expected you to speak Tamil?”That exchange between Aditya Patil and SpaceX engineer Vikram Subbiah is the starting point of this video. It is not really about one tweet. It is about a long-standing assumption that still shapes how many Indians treat each other outside India: that being Indian means you should speak Hindi. For a large number of South Indians — Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam speakers and others — that assumption is neither neutral nor harmless. Language is identity, family, and memory. You cannot reliably guess someone’s language from a passport.I am from Tamil Nadu. Tamil is my mother tongue. I have lived in the United States for 26 years. In Indian community spaces here, not knowing Hindi has sometimes been treated as surprising or incomplete. At grocery stores, in social settings, and at work, the switch to Hindi still happens. English has been enough for me to live and work. In some environments Telugu would have been more practical than Hindi. My father once encouraged me to learn French and German; those situations never fully arrived. The point is simple: different contexts need different languages. No single language is required to prove you are Indian.This California moment felt familiar because Tamil Nadu has been having the same argument for nearly ninety years. In 1937, under the Congress government of Rajaji, Hindi was made compulsory in Madras Presidency schools. Protests followed. More than 1,100 people were arrested, including Periyar and C.N. Annadurai. Two young men, Thalamuthu and Natarajan, died in custody; a government building in Egmore, Chennai, still carries their names. The order was withdrawn in 1940. It returned in 1965 when English was supposed to lose its status as an associate official language. Roughly 3,000 DMK members, including Annadurai, were taken into preventive custody. Official figures put the death toll around 70; unofficial counts were far higher. Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri eventually assured that English would continue. In 1968 Tamil Nadu rejected the three-language formula and stayed with two languages: Tamil and English. That policy remains. Even later AIADMK governments that allied with the BJP did not accept compulsory Hindi. Annadurai put the position clearly in Parliament: this looks like Hindi imperialism, and the South will not accept it. A country is not integrated by forcing one language.The same resistance continues today. Tamil Nadu has refused the National Education Policy’s three-language formula, and the Centre has withheld substantial school education funds as a result. When Subbiah said he does not speak Hindi, many Tamil people did not hear a new claim. They heard the old one, moved from a Madras school to a San Francisco networking room.The position in this video is the one Tamil Nadu has repeated for decades: we are not against Hindi.
