Laser Blended Vision (LASIK) Surgery for Presbyopia (Lao Hua) - All You Need to Know

NUH ophthalmologist, Dr David Chen shares about laser blended vision which is a form of LASIK that treats presbyopia (lao hua) by correcting one eye to see far and another eye to see near simultaneously. It is especially effective for presbyopic people who also have other vision conditions like myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

A suitable candidate for this surgery is someone who is:
44 years and above
Requires presbyopic glasses to see near
Has short-sightedness up to -8.00 dioptres or 800 degrees or
Has longsightedness up to +5 .00 dioptres or 500 degrees
Deemed suitable for refractive surgery by the eye doctor

Before undergoing the laser blended vision surgery, you will be expected to:
Answer a questionnaire about your daily activities and hobbies
Undergo a comprehensive eye examination to help your doctor understand the nature and degree of your vision condition, thickness and curvature of the cornea as well as the tolerance level for monovision
With these results, your doctor will decide if you are a suitable candidate for the surgery

About laser blended vision surgery process which typically takes less than 10 minutes:
Anesthetic eye drops will be applied
To prevent the eye from blinking, it will be held open by an eyelid holder
A flap is created in the cornea using the first laser
A second laser will apply the treatment to the eye
After the treatment flap is replaced to its original position without any stitching
