India has approved its largest-ever defence acquisition, clearing the purchase of 114 Rafale fighter jets to significantly strengthen the Indian Air Force (IAF). Valued at approximately ₹3.25 lakh crore, this historic deal marks a major leap in India’s air combat capability and indigenous defence production.

The proposal, approved by the Defence Procurement Board, will move through the Defence Acquisition Council and the Cabinet Committee on Security. The Rafale acquisition is expected to take place under an intergovernmental agreement with France, ensuring transparency and strategic cooperation.

Deliveries are expected to begin from 2030, with a substantial portion of the aircraft being manufactured in India under Make in India, featuring indigenous weapons, missiles, and secure data systems. This deal will raise India’s total Rafale fleet to 176 aircraft, addressing the critical squadron shortfall caused by retiring MiG fighter jets.
