As part of The Coaches’ Voice inaugural event, The Coaching Conference 2021, we brought together a panel of elite-level coaches to discuss the important issue of player development.

In this excerpt from an enjoyable and interesting hour-long discussion, then Stockport County manager Simon Rusk reflects on his long spell coaching in the Brighton Academy, and responds to a question on coaches retaining their individuality when working within a defined coaching structure. Justin Cochrane, head of player development and coaching at Manchester United, explains the key difference “between coaching football and coaching players”. Paul Heckingbottom, then the Under-23 coach at Sheffield United, stresses the need for a clear footballing philosophy throughout a club and explains his approach to recruiting talented young players. Kevin Nolan, first-team coach at West Ham, expands on this topic with reference to his time managing at a lower level with Notts County.
