The working relationship of Hothouse emerged organically from the repeated transdisciplinary collaborations between new media art collective INTERーMISSION (IーM), creative design agency Currency Design (CD) and thereafter with speculative architecture research lab formAxioms (fXØ). In late 2024, the collective was invited to participate in the Design Research Fellowship, an initiative by SAM Design Collection. As Hothouse approached their fifth anniversary in March 2025, this Fellowship became an opportunity to critically dissect and refine their methods for engaging in transdisciplinary design collaborations within Singapore’s independent artistic landscape.

On the evening of 22 March 2025, Hothouse presented 𝘕𝘰 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦, a sharing session and panel discussion as part of the Fellowship showcase, 𝘚𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘙𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨: 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 2024-25 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘍𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘴. Held at their space in Aliwal Arts Centre, each member presented a static map of how they envisioned or perceived the collective’s structure, function and/or organisation, while “Interlocuteurs” Harry Burke and Ethel Pang expanded on their research methodologies and examination of the collective.

The Design Research Fellowship, a platform for alternative pathways of design(-adjacent) research. It supports transdisciplinary, in-progress endeavours that do not fit easily into established frameworks, but remain informed by design practices, philosophies, and/or methodologies.

SAM Design Collection examines multi-, inter-, and trans-disciplinary practices at the intersection of contemporary art and design. It seeks to complicate long-held binaries and hierarchies that have typically separated art and design, despite persistent convergences. Design is positioned not as a monolithic and distinct sphere, but rather as a perspective through which SAM can engage with an expanded field of creative practitioners.
