STORYLINE:
Israeli troops and Hezbollah militants exchanged heavy gunfire on the Lebanese side of the border on Wednesday and Israelis have been injured, security officials said.
AP Television filmed intense Israeli military movement near the northern Israeli town of Moshav Avivim, just north of Safed, on Israel's northern border with Lebanon.
Noise of shells being fired and huge plumes of smoke could be seen on the Lebanese side of the border.
Officials speaking on condition of anonymity said that there were reports of injuries on both sides, but did not say if there were any fatalities.
The Israeli army confirmed that there were clashes with Hezbollah in the area and some Israelis had suffered casualties.
They would not elaborate.
Israeli troops have been making what they call "pinpoint raids" inside Lebanon for the past few days in a bid to target Hezbollah rocket launching sites.
The violence began on Wednesday (12 July 2006) when fighters of the Shiite Muslim Hezbollah, a group allied with Iran and Syria, snatched two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid.
