You might say our camera traps are monitoring the Asian Water Monitor. Varanus salvator doesn't swing by the mudhole very often, so we consider it a bonus when it does.
Some fun facts about Asian Water Monitors:
1. They are big, reaching up to 10 feet long.
2. They can stay submerged for 30 minutes.
3. They are the only reptile other than snakes to have a forked tongue.
4. They are very fast and use "open pursuit" hunting rather than stalking and ambushing.
And some not so fun facts:
1. They are exploited for the pet, fashion, and traditional medicine trades, Their skins are used for dietary protein, and in religious ceremonies
2. Each year, over 1 million of their skins are traded, mostly in Indonesia.
