There are multiple bonus stages hidden in Gradius III, and they're not exactly easy to find without a guide or something. Heck, even with a guide, I had a bit of trouble locating a couple of them!
So, yeah, if you move into a certain spot in certain stages, and in most cases, fulfilled certain conditions, you'll warp to a bonus stage that contains a good number of power ups, points (yellow items), and 1-ups (green items). They also all contain lots of small orbs that you've got to shoot out of the way to get through. Be careful, as you can still die quite easily in bonus stages, but if you survive them, you'll skip the rest of the stage you were on, including its boss! However, if you bite it in a bonus stage, you'll return to the stage you were on, and the game won't let you enter that same bonus stage again.
Note: These were all done on the first loop of Normal difficulty, and I did use a small amount of tool-assistance in some places (especially when trying to trigger the stage 4 and stage 7 bonus stages).
(0:00) Stage 2: Late in the stage, you'll see an opening in the ceiling and floor that enemies come out of. Move yourself towards the hole in the floor, being careful of emerging enemies. During the bonus stage, be aware of a couple of places where the small orbs will just appear out of nowhere, which will cheaply kill you if you're not in a safe spot.
(1:45) Stage 3: Just after the volcanos in this stage, you'll move down a vertical corridor and you'll see a platform with turrets on it fall from the ceiling shortly afterwards (this is around the time the music changes). Move towards the ceiling where that platform was to enter the bonus stage. However, I believe you have to destroyed all of the ground based enemies in the stage up to this point for the bonus stage to trigger.
(3:29) Stage 4: This one's tricky to find. There's one particular Moai head in the middle of the stage that rises up if you don't destroy it, but continues to face away from you. Fly near its backside to enter the bonus stage. However, make sure nothing is highlighted in your power up bar at the time (so make sure you can use it up on something), or the game won't let you in.
(5:34) Stage 5: In the middle of the stage, you'll fly underneath an upside-down mountain coming from the ceiling. The bonus stage entrance is near the ceiling just on the other side of it. However, the hundreds digit of your score must be 3, 5, or 7 to enter, but with all of the things flying around in the stage that are worth 300 points apiece, you could just position yourself on the entrance while still shooting things and eventually your score should qualify, letting you in.
(7:34) Stage 7: This one is tricky to find and trigger. I had to actually look at another YouTube video showing somebody entering this bonus stage just so I could get it to trigger myself. I think if you take the route I show in the video through the stage, then fly into what appears to be a tiny dead-end just after a long diagonally-downward shaft, you can enter it. However, I'm not 100% sure if that's what you need to do, and if you try to enter, and it doesn't trigger, you're probably dead, so it's definitely risky.
If any of the above information is inaccurate, or somebody knows exactly what allows stage 7's bonus stage to trigger, let me know!
