More than ever large scale strategic energy storage systems will be playing a key role in providing affordable and stable energy prices while avoiding future geopolitical conflicts.
Whatever the energy source, Natural gas, Hydrogen or Electricity, these can be safely and reliably stored in underground energy storage systems. The most common method is to create large caverns inside mountains of buried salt, so called Salt Diapirs.
Frequently these salt structures are thought to be homogenous, and therefore geotechnically hazard free. But in reality salt diapirs are slightly more complex. And each structure is unique.
Salt structures can present thick carbonate and clastic sequences at their base or interbedded, critically reducing available storage space.
Salt diapirs can be intruded by volcanic rocks which can create drilling hazards and permeability issues.
Salt domes are usually capped and surrounded by gypsum breccias that can constrains both storage volumes and feasibility of energy storage projects.
Thick salt sequences are also commonly composed by layer evaporitic sequences with contrasting rheologies that can compromise drilling and seal integrity of an ideal storage salt cavern.
These are some of the geological features that most geoengineering teams are commonly unaware when planing such underground storage facilities.
Come with Geo Logica to see such examples in the field, in quarries and salt mines in Portugal to discover how to address such complexity and design your underground storage system in the most efective and predictable way.
Come with us see the logic of a planet in constant change❣️🌍
