Os Mundi – Latin Mass 1970 (Germany, Krautrock, Progressive Rock)
Os Mundi is sometimes called Berlin's first rock big band, as by the end of their career, their lineup had grown to more than 10 members. Their origins began with the bands "Safebreakers" and "Orange Surprise," featuring vocalist Udo Arndt and drummer Christoph Busse. The former performed other bands' beat hits and released a single, as well as appearing in the film "Girls, Girls." While the latter, although exclusively original material, left no recordings. When a new musical trend arrived in Germany in the late 1960s, Udo and Christoph decided to play progressive rock with jazz influences, teaming up with bassist Andreas Villain. Arndt also played guitar and keyboards, in addition to the microphone. A little later, free-jazz saxophonist and flutist Dietrich Markgraf joined the aforementioned trio, and the musicians began working on their debut album, but first they had to decide on a language. English seemed too banal, and German was generally considered more suitable for pop hits, so the guys settled on Latin, especially since their project's name (meaning "birth of the world") also had Latin roots, and they had a classical education. They took the model for their debut, "Os Mundi," from the Electric Prunes, who, back in 1968, had adapted a Catholic mass to the format of psychedelic rock in their program "Mass in F Minor." The idea easily caught the attention of the Metronome label, and in 1970, the album "Latin Mass" hit stores. Unfortunately, the listening public didn't share the publishers' enthusiasm, and the darkly atmospheric guitar tour-de-force, combined with garage organ, rough production, and rather skillful use of special effects, wasn't met with thunderous applause. The band, however, wasn't particularly discouraged by the failure, and began to raise its profile through concerts, simultaneously expanding its lineup with second drummer Wolfgang "Buddy" Mandler and cellist Raimund "Mikro" Rilling.
