ভূমিকম্প হচ্ছে ভূমির কম্পন। ভূ অভ্যন্তরে যখন একটি শিলা অন্য একটি শিলার উপরে উঠে আসে তখন ভূমি কম্পন হয়।সাধারণত তিন ধরনের ভূমিকম্প হয়ে থাকে—প্রচণ্ড, মাঝারি ও মৃদু। আবার উৎসের গভীরতা অনুসারে ভূমিকম্পকে তিন ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়—অগভীর, মধ্যবর্তী ও গভীর ভূমিকম্প। ভূমিকম্পের কেন্দ্রস্থল ভূ-পৃষ্ঠের ৭০ কিলোমিটারের মধ্যে হলে অগভীর, ৭০ থেকে ৩০০ কিলোমিটারের মধ্যে হলে মধ্যবর্তী এবং ৩০০ কিলোমিটারের নিচে হলে তাকে গভীর ভূমিকম্প হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করা হয়।ভূমিকম্পের মাত্রা নির্ণয়ের জন্য যে যন্ত্র ব্যবহৃত হয় তার নাম রিখটার স্কেল।ভূমিকম্প এক ডিগ্রি বৃদ্ধি পেলে এর মাত্রা ১০ থেকে ৩২ গুণ পর্যন্ত বৃদ্ধি পেতে পারে। রিখটার স্কেলে ভূমিকম্পের মাত্রা—৫ - ৫.৯৯ মাঝারি, ৬ - ৬.৯৯ তীব্র, ৭ - ৭.৯৯ ভয়াবহ এবং ৮-এর উপর অত্যন্ত ভয়াবহ।
