I’m generally not a big fan of young sheng pu-erh because of its bitterness and very fresh, green character. That sharp, grassy intensity is usually not what I look for in a tea session.
This 2024 Glutinous Rice Sheng Pu-erh offers an interesting twist. The addition of glutinous rice herb slightly softens the bitterness and adds a noticeable sweet aftertaste. The sweetness lingers pleasantly in the mouth and makes the tea more approachable compared to a standard young sheng.
However, this improvement comes with a trade-off. The aroma is quite strong and dominated by the glutinous rice note, which can feel unusual and, at times, not entirely pleasant. It shifts the tea away from a traditional sheng profile and into something more flavored and niche.
Overall, this tea will likely appeal to dedicated fans of glutinous rice aroma and experimental combinations. For those who truly enjoy that distinctive herbal-rice character, it could be an interesting experience. Personally, it’s not quite my style, but I can understand why it has its audience.
