Cabbage moths tend to be the bane of every brassica plant’s existence. In addition to crop rotation, and attracting beneficial predatory insects, companion planting can drastically help to reduce cabbage moth and worm pressure. Here’s how it works:
🥦 When garlic or onion are tightly interplanted with brassica crops like broccoli and cauliflower, the scent can disguise the brassicas and repel the moths. This means more than a border of garlic around a bed… I mean serious interplanting.
🥦 As for weeds, the more space we intentionally take up with crops, the less room weeds have to set and establish. Remember, many weeds don’t start from under soil or mulch (runners excluded). They start from windblown or animal-dropped seeds that make soil contact and germinate. More intentional plantings mean less soil surface area, more shading of the soil’s surface, and more competition for water and nutrients to weeds.
And, yes, the garlic and onions still produce beautiful bulbs for harvest. 🙂
