from Barry Hansen's (aka Dr. Demento) 1991 CD notes:
Legend tells us that THE TRASHMEN, a classic "garage band" from Minnesota, sometimes delighted their audiences by traveling to their gigs in a real garbage truck. Like most garage bands, the Trashmen fortified their repertoire with a few covers of rhythm & blues hits. They might be just another name on the collectors' auction lists today if their drummer (the late Steve Wahrer) hadn't (I presume) gargled razor blades before taking the lead vocals on "Surfin' Bird" (1963) a thinly disguised cover of "The Bird's the Word" by the Rivingtons which had been a fair-sized R&B hit earlier that same year.
(This bizarre novelty peaked at #4 on BILLBOARD's Hot 100 in Dec. 1963.)
PERSONNEL: Tony Andreason (lead guitar); Dal Winslow (rhythm guitar); Bob Reed (bass guitar); Steve Wahrer (drums, lead vocal); Jack Bates (producer);
