On Thursday, December 18th, I’ll be introducing one of three major bills — this one to bring nonpartisan, ranked-choice elections to all of New York City.
Staten Island already used this system when I was elected in April. It works. It gives voters more power, reduces the influence of rigid party labels, and ensures the majority actually picks the winner.
It also prevents outcomes like what we just saw:
— A terrific Council Member, Kristy Marmorato, losing her seat solely because she’s a Republican in a Democratic primary.
— Voters being pressured to “unite” behind candidates instead of ranking their honest preferences.
— Republicans forced to choose Andrew Cuomo for mayor because their preferred candidate had “no shot” under the current system.
— Calls for Curtis Sliwa to drop out because people couldn’t rank candidates in order of preference.
Ranked-choice voting fixes all of that.
It rewards candidates who build coalitions, appeal to diverse voters, and stay focused on issues — not labels.
And yes… this is the second time I’m filming this video, because the first version had no sound at all. Technology keeps me humble.
This bill is about giving New Yorkers what they deserve:
A system that’s fairer, cleaner, and actually reflects the will of the people.
More info coming soon — and stay tuned for the other two bills I’m introducing on Thursday.
If you support real election reform in NYC, hit “like,” leave a comment, and share this video.
