Join me on a walk through four art exhibitions across Los Angeles. At Perrotin Gallery, Jin Meyerson’s SAFE SPACE takes us into orbit, drawing on the Apollo 8 Earthrise photograph to explore the fragility of our planet and the search for belonging through fractured, reassembled paintings that hover between digital and physical. At Simchowitz Gallery, Douglas Knesse’s Harvest under the Sun layers paint on reclaimed truck tarps, blending spirituality, resilience, and the rhythms of Rio de Janeiro life into luminous works that hold both chaos and renewal. Also at Simchowitz, Gabrielle Graessle’s True Romance transforms childhood memories of glossy auto catalogs and sports cars into playful, larger-than-life canvases bursting with color, nostalgia, and glamour. At Vielmetter, Kwesi Botchway’s Be Your Own Cool offers intimate portraits that honor individuality and community, celebrating contemporary Black life with a palette of regal purples and deep blacks that affirm dignity and self-expression. Finally, at Night Gallery, Claire Colette’s Shoot Forth Thunder brings together muted tones, elemental symbols, and carefully layered materials to create paintings that feel meditative yet charged with sudden disruptions—reminding us that even upheaval can spark new beginnings.
