Carbon monoxide or CO is a virtually undetectable, poisonous gas that’s emitted when fuels don’t burn cleanly. There are many potential sources of CO in homes including gas- or oil-powered heat, stoves and automobiles. People may experience a headache, nausea or dizziness due to carbon monoxide and might mistake the symptoms for a virus and dismiss them. In this installment of Health Watch, Theodore Macnow, MD, pediatric emergency medicine physician, discusses the effects of carbon monoxide, explains why children and the elderly are most susceptible to poisoning, and reviews what you can do to protect your family against the dangers of accidental CO poisoning.
