Walk Valletta. Love Valletta. Proudly known simply as “The City,” Valletta is enclosed within impenetrable walls steeped in history, natural treasures, heartwarming people, and insanely delicious food. Considered an open-air museum, it’s flanked on either side by natural harbors filled with the bright turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Valletta, as a whole, is best understood on foot.
By walking, you begin to uncover how this city earned its titles: European Capital of Culture in 2018 and UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. Begin your journey (as we did) at Triq Ir-Repubblika, the city’s main thoroughfare, and simply follow the crowd. Soon, you’ll arrive at the Co-Cathedral of St. John—and once you step over its threshold, you’ll feel as if you’ve reached the end of the rainbow and found a bag of gold.
Roam the historic streets—Old Bakery, Old Theater, Merchants Street, St. John’s Street, Archbishop Street, and more. Each leads to hidden corners and off-the-beaten paths that are well worth tiring your feet for.
Reward yourself with panoramic views of Valletta’s skyline and the Grand Harbor from Fort St. Elmo, Quarry Wharf, Lower and Upper Barrakka Gardens, St. Christopher Bastion, and pay homage to the Unknown Soldier at the Siege Bell War Memorial.
Here’s a video of a lovely walk we took during the day around this magnificent, fortified city. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed the journey.
