Clean catch urine specimens from adults are likely the most common specimen we get in the microbiology lab and it is one of only 3-4 specimens that patients collect themselves. Therefore, the job of the medical staff is to verbally explain how to properly collect the specimen. In addition to verbal instructions, there should be illustrations available in the bathroom or area where the patient will collect the specimen.

The videos were produced in partnership with Dr. J. Michael Miller, Director of Microbiology Technical Services, a private consulting service for diagnostic labs. Dr. Miller previously spent 35 years with the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and has had a long term interest in specimen management and clinical relevance.
