The border between Poland and Belarus has become the epicenter of a growing migrant crisis. Since the start of this year, more than 26,000 people from 49 different countries have attempted to cross into Poland. Warsaw accuses Minsk of deliberately facilitating the flow of migrants as part of a political strategy to destabilise the European Union.
Polish prime minister Donald Tusk announced plans to temporarily suspend the right to asylum as part of a broader effort to curb irregular migration, a move driven by escalating tensions with Belarus.
The humanitarian crisis on the border began in 2021, with severe ill-treatment of migrants and asylum seekers by border forces on both sides. Hundreds of individuals from countries such as Iraq, Syria, Iran, Ethiopia, Yemen, and Afghanistan, seeking refuge in the EU, often find themselves trapped in the harsh and inhospitable border zone between the two nations.
