Today's walk, on a typical rainy autumn day, leads us along the Gürtel, starting from Josefstädter Straße all the way to Westbahnhof. The Gürtel, literally "belt" road, is Austria's busiest street and for the most part runs parallel to Vienna's famous Ring Road.
In 1873 the Gürtel was laid out at the site of the former "Linienwall", which used to be an outer line of fortifications between the city's suburbs and outlying villages. Today most of Vienna's red-light district is situated around Gürtel, as you may notice in the video.
Being a part of Vienna that is not known by many foreigners and tourists, especially since many see it as one of the "uglier" parts of the city, I had a special interest in showing this place to you.
Videos of Vienna's Inner City and Old Town are all over Youtube, while these places only make up a small portion of what is actually the Vienna we locals know about and live in.
