Cylindrical Stone Core Extraction: Precision Industrial Results
Extracting a perfect stone cylinder is essential for geological surveying and structural testing. The integrity of the core provides vital data about the material's density and composition.
1. The Mechanics of the "Tapered" Grip
In professional core drilling, especially in mining, a Double Tube Core Barrel is used. The inner tube remains stationary while the outer tube rotates. This protects the stone core from being washed away or eroded by the drilling fluid. Once the target depth is hit, the "core lifter"—a spring-loaded, tapered ring—slides down and wedges the core tightly as the barrel is retracted.
2. Hydraulic Core Ejection
In industrial settings, removing the core from inside the steel tube can be difficult due to friction. Professionals use Hydraulic Extractors. By pumping water or air at high pressure into one end of the tube, the stone cylinder is "pushed" out smoothly onto a receiving tray. This prevents the "hammering" method, which could fracture the delicate sample.
3. Surface Finish and Kerf Analysis
The quality of the extraction is visible on the core's surface. A "spiraled" surface indicates excessive vibration during drilling, while a smooth, glass-like finish shows a perfect balance of RPM (Rotation Per Minute) and Down-pressure. The "kerf"—the gap between the core and the hole wall—must be kept clear of debris to ensure the core doesn't bind and snap prematurely.
