The Nayirah Testimony was a pivotal 1990 congressional appearance in which a teenage girl alleged that Iraqi soldiers removed babies from incubators in Kuwait, leaving them to die. The testimony, widely broadcast and cited by U.S. leaders, became a key moral justification for the Gulf War.
It was later revealed that Nayirah was the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the U.S., that the testimony was organized with the assistance of the PR firm Hill & Knowlton, and that the claims could not be independently verified. Human rights organizations later retracted or corrected earlier endorsements of the story.
The case is significant not because of a single false claim, but because it demonstrates how emotional narratives can bypass scrutiny, mobilize public support for war, and outpace factual correction. It stands as a foundational example of modern dirty politics, where persuasion relies less on evidence and more on emotional immediacy.
