Prior to the incident, the dash cam owner noticed the vehicle ahead had malfunctioning brake lights and maintained extra following distance. When traffic came to a sudden halt, the lack of brake lights made the deceleration difficult to gauge.

Realizing they could not stop in time, the user swerved onto the shoulder to avoid rear-ending the vehicle. The driver behind them was unable to react in time, resulting in a six-car pileup. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported.
