Rachel's parents wanted a divorce. They couldn't stand each other's company. At Rachel's birthday party, they appeared separately and were unaware of each other's presence. The friends split the party into two apartments to prevent Rachel's parents from meeting. At the end of the evening, Mrs. Green almost saw her husband. But Joey kissed her and thereby diverted her attention.

Chandler was very upset that no one would kiss him on New Year's Eve. When the New Year came, Chandler begged for someone to kiss him. Suddenly, Joey does this.
