Wang Ki, a Chinese soldier arrested by Indian forces during the 1962 Sino-Indian War on espionage charges in Arunachal Pradesh, was released after seven years and directed by Indian authorities to settle in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, rather than being sent back to China. He built a life there, running a flour mill and marrying a woman from the Kunbi caste. However, the lack of a caste certificate has denied his children and grandchildren access to government welfare schemes and higher education opportunities. Now 86 years old, Wang Ki is appealing to authorities to grant his grandchildren a caste certificate based on his wife Sushila's caste, arguing that since Indian officials instructed him to settle here, it is also their responsibility to provide the family with proper documentation.
