The Composer - Raman Maharjan:
Raman is native of Kirtipur, a small Newari town in the Southern rim of Kathmandu valley vibrant with ancient Newari cultures and rich musical heritage Raman comes with unique cultural context on his styles and skills. His humble nature flowers beautifully with a refined skill of blow, amazing melodies and ragas in the bamboo flute that he has been playing since the last fifteen years under the guidance of his guru Mohan Prasad Joshi.
Raman was born in 1971 in Kirtipur from where after attending, local schools. he struggled his way up to the world of sounds and expressive elements of the bamboo flute. Playing during devotional chanting in temples. courtyards and festivals with his grandfathers and uncles established his basic foundation of blowing the flute the Newart way. Later with his guru's guidance and support. Roman clipped himself completely into practicing Eastern Classical Ragas. Immense practice of this musical form placed him in the professional world of Nepali flute players and he lives up to this day creating and exploring new compositions with his fellow musician friends and colleagues.
Raman holds a diploma with distinction in flute from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, India and is a recipient of Narayani Sangeet Award. He Is olso a graduate of Management from Tribhuvan University in Nepal. Raman has already been part of the making of eight musical albums. He has travel experiences of Japan, India, Norway, China and Tibet Raman is a member of the Trikaal group.
In this debut solo album, Raman has shown his versatile skills with the flute and musical compositions to draw expressive sounds from all sorts of flute - stone. clay, bamboo. wood - all in unison to his major theme to express the journey he has traversed in his life - from ancient Newari towns to the highlands of Tibet and China.
Songs & Meanings :
1. Manjushree Sutra - An ode to Bodhisattva Manjushree's compassion and procreating energy. The artist paints this devotion with Buddhistt chants citing Bodhisattva Manjushree's prayers and infusing them with meditative notes of the flute. The chants and music pays homage to the Bodhisattva's quest to help sentient beings attain enlightenment .
2. Way to Yamdruk Lake - During the journey in the very depths of the Tibetan heartland towards Lhasa. the artist finds himself submerged in the glory of the Yamdruk Lake at 3,800 meters In this ode to the lake reflections of the deep blue skies and the dramatic clouds are profoundly blown across the spaces of the musical notes and the flutes
3. Om Mani Padme Hung - This profound and purest form of devotional expression to praise and understand the state of Buddhahood is beautifully woven in flutes and ambience of bells and winds
4. Calm Waters Peaceful Mind - The soft and dreamy melodies of Bamboo and Tibetan flute transcends the mind to a sublime realm of meditative silence. As the melodies drift on, echoes of personal joys and compassion amplify awakening the focused mind towards a newer and positive beginning.
5. Nomads of the High Himalayas - A musical portrait of the Tibetan nomads whom the artist met along the way on his journey to Lhasa. His sentimental colors are expressed through the chants of compassion and a beautiful melody of the flute that speak the same language in musical notes.
6. Bamboo Divine - A profound sensation of the tactile reverberation of the Bamboo Flute that gently harmonizes with the meditating body and transcends the mind to a blissful state of being. In a slow and droning ambience, the artist procreates a soft but a very strong energy - as if like a rebirth - to understand the true nature of existence.
7. Sakura - Memories of the Japanese Sakura is very gracefully expressed using the musical motifs of the traditional Japanese Sakura song. While the cherry blossoms in Japan, the artist dissolves himself in the mist of Nepal landscapes In a pure state of calm mind, meditating for the awakening of a Sublime Satori.
