The McKay Hollow trail, in Monte Sano State Park, near Huntsville, Alabama, is about a 5.5 mile (8.9 km) long loop that actually connects together the McKay Hollow Trail itself with the South Plateau Loop Trail and a piece of the North Plateau Loop Trail to make a pleasant loop hike.
This is one of my favorite loop hikes on Monte Sano. It starts out at the Monte Sano picnic area near the park entrance and descends very steeply about 600 ft (183 m) into a deep valley. I can't stress enough how steep this first part is. Be very cautious. Once the valley floor is achieved, there is about a 1 mile (1.6 km) long stretch of almost flat trail that wraps around Monte Sano before ascending, through a series of switch-backs, back up to the top of the plateau. Once the plateau is achieved, and especially in the winter, I like to take a little side-trip down to see the view at O'Shaughnessy Point. On this day, the view from there was particularly lovely. Finally, we returned back to the main park area via the South Plateau Loop Trial and then took a short section of the North Plateau Loop Trial back to the picnic area where we started.
