Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat game that permits hanging and grappling, each status and at the ground, using strategies from various fight sports and martial arts.

The first documented use of the term mixed martial arts became in a review of UFC 1 by means of tv critic Howard Rosenberg in 1993.

Originally promoted as a competition to discover the only martial arts for a real unarmed fight,

competitors from extraordinary fighting styles have been pitted in opposition to each other in contests with relatively few guidelines.

Later, individual fighters incorporated a couple of martial arts into their style.

MMA promoters have been pressured to undertake additional rules to increase competitors' safety, comply with recreation rules and to broaden the mainstream attractiveness of the game.

Following these changes, the sport has seen increased recognition with a pay-per-view commercial enterprise that rivals boxing and professional wrestling.
