I talk about gerrymandering, voter suppression, growing corruption, and how that affected my decision to become an expat and start My Expat Life here in Tirana.

You’ll also hear the practical side of immigrating to Albania: applying for the Unique Permit, getting apostilled documents and an FBI background check, visiting the immigration office and the U.S. Embassy for my affidavit of eligibility, sorting out a virtual mailbox (Presley Mailbox), choosing a roaming-friendly phone plan (US Mobile), and setting up banking with Charles Schwab for foreign transaction–friendly ATM access.

In this 360 edition, I reflect on my mom’s experience in a private equity–run nursing home, why I didn’t want that future for myself, and why Albania’s transition to democracy since the 1990s — after the era of Enver Hoxha and the one-party communist state — matters to me. I talk about religious diversity in Albania, the welcoming culture, and why this city feels like a mix of Paris, Budapest, and something uniquely its own.
