In this video, we explain the different types of winter precipitation (snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain) and the atmospheric conditions that lead to each one. Using real Skew-T diagrams from weather balloon soundings, we break down the vertical temperature profile of the atmosphere and show how melting layers, or warm noses, and refreezing layers determine what falls at the surface.
