This is an edited video of an old talk with Tony Robbins at TED in 2006, focusing on his key question:
"Why do people do what they do?"
He explains that Decisions shape our Destiny.There are 3 decisions we are facing every moment of our lives
1. What am I going to focus on? (What is happening?)
2. What meaning am I going to give it? (Is this good or bad? Is this the terrible end of something old or the wonderful beginning of something new?)
3. What am I going to do?
What shapes us and causes us to make these choices?
1. State - our Physical or Emotional state from moment to moment.
2. Our model of the world - Your long term world view
Then there are 3 important points in people's lives:
TARGET - What you want to get? Usually falls into one of the below 4 or 6 needs.
MAP - How are you going to get there?
EMOTION - What emotion are you going to use to carry yourself through your life?
1.Certainty - You need to be certain you will have food to eat and a roof over your head.
2.Uncertainty - If you are certain of everything in your life, you will get bored. You need surprises, even if they can be surprise problems.
3.Significance - Everyone desires to be significant. That can be by being the richest man in your town, being the most important person to your wife or by becoming famous. This need can also drive some people to become significant by being a criminal or murderer.
4.Connection and Love - Whether you get connection from your friends or love from you wife or husband, we all need it.
[The first four he calls the needs of the person, the remaining two are the needs of the spirit]
5.Grow - We all need to have growth in our lives. Even if you have a successful business or a great relationship, if it's not growing and becoming better and better you feel like crap. Tony explains that we Grow so we can contribute more to others
6.Contribute - The secret to fulfilment in life is giving. No matter how much you grow and satisfy yourself, if you're not contributing to others, you won't find your sense of fulfilment
The MAP you use to get what you want will determine what kind of person you are. Your map might say to get needs 1. 2. and 3. immediately, you can resort to violence. Your map might say to get needs 1. 3. and 4. you need a good job and a spouse. Whatever your map is, make sure it's taking you where you want to go.
Then, make sure you have the right EMOTION to take you there. Some people will find a reason to get pissed in any situation, whereas some people will find a reason to be happy and excited all the time. What's most beneficial?
