Moontower Duo (Matthew Lyons on left, Stephen Krishnan on right) performs their original piece Cardinal Craig composed by Matthew. This video was recorded at the Butler School of Music Recording Studio at the University of Texas at Austin, with audio engineering by Andy Stoltz.
Program notes from the composer:
During the pandemic, I would have lunch every now and then in my Mom’s backyard to catch up. She had installed a birdfeeder in the center of the yard for entertainment (and distraction from remote work), and we would watch the daily aviary traffic while dining and chatting, sometimes joined by her partner, Craig. One day, a cardinal stopped by and she exclaimed: “Oh, it’s Cardinal Craig!” I said, “that’s cute, you named a bird after Craig. But how do you know it’s that particular cardinal?” She explained: “Because that one just won’t stop talking!” Delighted by the low-key playful jab and alliterative whimsy, it also occurred to me that there were probably no songs out there named “Cardinal Craig”, so when I got home I started writing the chirpy main melody to change that fact.
“Cardinal Craig” is dedicated to my Mom, Craig, and of course the titular Cardinal Craig, who graced our socially distanced lunches with his presence.
