Описание: In the early 13th century, Saint Elizabeth, still venerated today as a symbol of active charity, lived and worked at Wartburg Castle. The Augustinian monk Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German here in 1521/22, thus laying the foundations for a unified German written language.

The Wartburg Festival of 1817 links the castle with the beginnings of early German democracy. Five hundred students expressed their vision of a unified German nation-state, a constitution, and civil rights in a youth protest rally.

In 1838, Grand Duke Carl Alexander of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach decided on the architectural and artistic renovation of his ancestors' residence—with the declared goal of creating a national monument. In deliberate correspondence with the preserved original structure, the commissioned architect Hugo von Ritgen created new buildings on the castle grounds, which, by 1890, had ingeniously complemented the palace, knights' house, bailiwick, and battlements to form the castle's present appearance.

The Wartburg Castle has inspired artists in literature, painting, and music, and as a widely known memorial site of German history and culture, it has become a place of longing for the general public since the 19th century.

With the reunification of Germany in 1990, the Wartburg Castle regained its place at the heart of Germany and Europe. As a world-renowned historical and cultural site, it is now one of Thuringia's leading tourist destinations.
