If three experienced lighthouse keepers are trapped on a tiny, isolated rock in the middle of a deadly winter storm, you expect them to hunker down inside the thick stone walls. So why did they step out into the freezing Atlantic night, and why did one of them walk out into a hurricane without his coat?
In December 1900, the relief ship Hesperus arrived at the remote island of Eilean Mòr in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The crew expected to be greeted by the three men stationed at the Flannan Isles Lighthouse: James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald MacArthur. Instead, they found absolute, terrifying silence. The entrance gate was closed, the front door was securely shut, the clocks had stopped, and the beds were unmade. But the detail that continues to haunt investigators was found hanging quietly on a peg by the door: only two sets of heavy weather oilskins were missing. MacArthur's coat was still inside.
The physical reality of the scene defies logic. It is a strict rule of the Northern Lighthouse Board that one man must remain inside the light at all times. Why would an experienced mariner break protocol and run outside into a raging gale in just his shirtsleeves? And what terrified them so much that the final, bizarre logbook entries described seasoned sailors weeping in fear of a storm that local weather stations claimed wasn't even happening yet? Did a freak rogue wave wipe them off the face of the cliff, or did cabin fever and isolation trigger a fatal, violent breaking point?
In this episode of Still Unanswered, we question:
