The Sami people of Northern Scandinavia fight for survival.
About the Sami people of Northern Scandinavia. The Sami are also known as the Lapps and number about 50,000 living in Samiland, and area crossing the current borders of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola peninsula in the USSR. The film has been made by the Sami at a time when their way of life is under significant threat.
For centuries the Sami, a nomadic people, have lived as herdsmen and fishermen evolving a culture notably different from that of the Nordic Scandinavian. The Norwegian government's proposal to dam the Alta river, for a hydro-electric scheme, will bar Sami access to the land and water on which they have traditionally depended for their existence. The film includes specially shot material showing Sami reindeer herders and salmon fishermen at work and Sami protest against the Alta project.
A unique feature of the documentary is the inclusion of previously unseen archive film depicting Sami life during the 1920's. It is a moving and personal statement by the Sami film-makers.
This film is of historical interest but the issues raised are still current.
