Joseph Boulogne, le Chevalier de St Georges, was an outstanding composer of his time and a man of many parts: virtuoso violinist, conductor, prolific composer, fine horseman and champion fencer. Born eleven years before Mozart, who predeceased him by just seven years, St George’s music is similar, but by no means derivative of that of his more famous contemporary. He became the first non-white Freemason, and the first black colonel in the French Army. His output as a composer was prodigious: he produced 215 works, including operas, symphonies, sonatas, vocal works and some 25 virtuoso violin concertos, all of which he would have performed himself, to enormous contemporary acclaim.
