This is a video of the Hillsborough High School Choir's live performance of "Testimony" by Stephen Schwartz. The text of the "Testimony" was inspired by the It Gets Better project. In that spirit, this performance was part of a class project in which students wrote down things people had said to them that made them feel bad about themselves, and also things that made them feel good about themselves.
I took the students' pictures with each of their signs and played them as a slide show during our performance of the song. The first half of the song is all the negative things, and the second half, when the text and emotion of the song changes, begins the positive pictures.
The students found that they remembered the negative things more easily, and it was harder to think of the good things people said. The lesson learned: be conscious of what you say, and how your words affect others, just as we've been hurt ourselves. We also learned that there can never be enough kindness or kind words said to each other.
